Gleason coach Mike Bennett was all smiles after his Bulldog baseball team defeated McKenzie 4-0 at McKenzie City Park Wednesday afternoon.
And why not? His son, Colin, just pitched a no-hitter against the highly-touted Rebels, winners of five straight coming into the game. MOreover, it was the first victory the Bulldogs had earned over the Rebels since 1995. That gamew was played at Gleason's Legion Field.
"It's been a long time," Bennett said with a smile. "I was proud of our kids."
He should have been. The Bulldogs frustrated the Rebels and kept them at arm's length just enough to push three runs across in the fourth and another in the fifth. The Rebels were left with six outs to make a comeback.
But Bennett was too tough. He wasn't overpowering, but just had good command of the stuff he had, a well-placed fast ball and an off-speed pitch, resembling a knuckle ball. Later in the game his curve ball came around.
As a result, the Rebels managed just four baserunners: two by walk, one by fielder's choice and one by hit batsman. Only one runner reached second base and that was Tyler Reeder after Parker Jones reached on a fielder's choice in the second. After Jones reached, Bennett retired 16 of the next 18 batters. Bennett only fanned three, but his defense did the rest.
Gleason was able to score three runs in the fourth. Tyler Verdell's one-out single scored Mayo then Cody Ezell's single brought drove in two more with two out. THe Bulldogs led 3-0. With two out in the fifth, the Bulldogs made things tougher on the struggling Rebels.
McKenzie had chances in the seventh. With one out, Tyler Reeder was hit by a pitch. But a double play ended the game.
The Rebels' defense was solid. Gleason just made the most of its opportunities. Jones had a good day with the glove at third, making one backhand stab, then charging a slow roller on the next play in the third inning. Reeder at first made five good picks out of the dirt at first. Hard-luck pitcher Nick Chappell struck out three, allowed six hits and issued six walks.
The Rebels fall to 10-6 on the year and host Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central in a key District 13A battle 6 p.m. Thursday night. Clint Kee, 4-0, will get the ball. Junior Tyler Holt will get the start Friday night when Clarksburg comes to town.
