When McKenzie coach Lynn Yarbrough commented about Tuesday night's game, she spoke two words: Parker Jones.
"That's all you have to say about this one tonight," he said. "That's the headline."
The Rebel senior struck out 10 West Carroll batters, walked one and allowed just one hit as McKenzie improved to 10-4 on the year, 2-0 in District 13A, as MHS defeated West Carroll 10-0 in six innings.
"Parker pitched really well and got stronger as he went along," Yarbrough said. "We didn't hit like I had hoped, but Parker really shut them down."
The Rebels hope to continue their winning streak against a well-coached Gleason squad 4:30 Wednesday at McKenzie City Park.
The Rebels weren't just overpowering at the plate, but did touch up three different War Eagle pitchers. McKenzie jumped on West Carroll early and took a 2-0 lead in the first. Drew Brown was hit by a pitch, Derek carr cranked an RBI triple and scored on Rusty Chapman's sacrifice. Reeder singled, but was stranded. Luke Anderson hit a shot to deep left-center that looked as if it was going to go out, but it didn't and he had to settle for a double. He was left there when the inning ended.
MHS tacked on another run in the third. Nick Chappell walked, stole second and scored on Reeder's RBI single. In the fourth, Kyle Kirk singled, stole second and took third on a passed ball while Brown was hit for the third time on the day. But both runners were left on the bags.
McKenzie erupted for five in the fifth. Chappell led off with a single, Reeder reached on a fielder's choice then Jones was hit by a pitch. Chappell, Reeder and Fussell, running for Jones, each scored on wild pitches. Tyler Holt raked a two-run single, followed by an Anderson single. Brown drove Anderson in with a sinlge. Chapman cranked a single, but both runners were left on base.
Jones really cracked down on the War Eagles, fanning half of his total in the fifth and sixth. In the sixth, Jones struck out two and forced a ground-out. When the Rebs batted in the sixth, Reeder blasted a double that almost left the park. Jones brought him home when he reached on an error. Anderson's RBI single brought Jones home to end the game in six.
"We're still not where we need to be and we're still lunging at pitches," Yarbrough said. "But this is our first home game and we haven't played much in the last 10 days so maybe that could be it."
The Rebels pounded 12 hits in the game. Reeder was 3-4 with an RBI and a double. Anderson was 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Holt was 2-4 with two RBI. Carr tripled in a run. Kirk, Brown and Chapman each singled. Jones had an RBI to help himself.
Lefty Chappell gets the ball Wednesday night. Clint Kee, 4-0 on the season with 47 strikeouts, will climb the hill for the next district game, Bruceton, Thursday night.
