Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central is well known for its controlled-chaos approach. The Lady Tigers attempted 28 three-point shots against host McKenzie, connected on nine, were better on the boards and claimed a 67-47 victory over the Lady Rebels.
Yes, it was a costly District 13A setback for the Lady Rebels in more ways than one. McKenzie's leading scorer Zana Carter suffered what is believed to be a season-ending knee injury in the first half. McKenzie, which has struggled offensively for much of the season, now has big shoes to fill on the offensive end.
"We just have to step up," said MHS coach Dan Ridley, concerned about the status of his star player. "I've coached girls who have had these injuries before and we just have to step up and be strong."
Carter's loss hurt, to be sure, but the Lady Tigers were just too tough with their baseline-to-baseline defense. Central forced 36 McKenzie turnovers and the Lady Rebels struggled to establish anything offensively. Sometimes getting the ball past the halfcourt line was a challenge.
Early, though, the Lady Rebels kept pace with Central. The Lady Tigers had trouble finding the mark, but did manage a pair of threes. Morgan Limbaugh, celebrating senior night for McKenzie, countered with a triple of her own. Trevatia Bowden's bucket with :02 to play drew the Lady Rebels to within one, 12-11. Things were looking good, until Carter suffered her injury.
Central opened the second frame with a 14-2 run and doubled up McKenzie 26-13. The closest McKenzie could get the rest of the way was eight points.
The Lady Tigers basically controlled the tempo the rest of the way. In the third frame, Central took 22 shots and hit three triples. Limbaugh hit a threebie, but Amber Kendall, Allyson Grooms and Haly Hayes were good from the arch as well. Grooms' old-fashioned three-point play gave the Lady Tigers a 15-point, 40-25 advantage. Central ended the third with a 9-0 run and led 53-31.
Central consolidated its run to start the fourth and ended a 13-0 spree. Limbaugh interrupted the string. In the final 3:37, McKenzie out paced the Lady Tigers to the finish line with a strong 12-3 burst.
Brittany Farley and Jessica Willis each scored 11 to lead the Lady Tigers.
Bowden led the Lady Rebels with 17, Limbaugh with 12, Amber Nunnery and Tenisha Carey with four each, Kelsey Carr with three, Alex Gray, Angelique Teague and Hannah Potts two each, Evan Hudgins one.
The Lady Rebels head to front-running West Carroll Tuesday night then end the regular season at home Thursday when Huntingdon visits.
