Cold-shooting Lady Rebs end '08 campaign

McKenzie girls just 8-40 from floor in 13A quarterfinals

By JIM STEELE

ATWOOD - It's hard to win when shots don't fall. And for some reason Monday night, in the District 13A tournament opening round, there was a lid on the McKenzie basket.

The Lady Rebels had plenty of good, close-in looks as well as wide-open perimeter shots, but struggled to find the mark against Huntingdon in quarterfinal action. The Fillies, who defeated MHS 40-30 just last Thursday night, captured a 50-29 win over the Lady Rebs. The loss ends McKenzie's season and ends long string of regional tournament appearances.

McKenzie had plenty of good looks at the bucket, but couldn't get shots to fall. The Lady Rebs were 8-40 from the field and had nearly as many points from the floor as they did from the line. MHS scored 18 points from the floor and 11 from the line. Huntingdon, meanwhile, wasn't just great, but good enough on this night. It was 18-55 from the floor.

What killed McKenzie was second-chance attempts. Often, when the Lady Rebs missed, it was one-and-done. McKenzie had 10 offensive boards and only two points off second chances. Huntingdon was too tough on the glass. The Fillies had 43 rebounds, 19 offensive.

But the Lady Rebels hung in the fight for a while. Huntingdon broke to a 7-2 advantage. Trevatia Bowden's bucket with :02 to play cut the Fillies' lead to three, 7-4. Huntingdon expanded its lead to 10 points, 17-7 late in the second frame, but Morgan Limbaugh's two late hoops in the final 1:12 cut the Filly lead to six, 17-11, at the half.

Samantha Wilkes lifted the lid for Huntingdon in the second half and the Fillies were up 19-11. Limbaugh and Alex Gray kept it close with a three-point flurry. McKenzie trailed 19-14. The Lady Rebels' scoring dearth sealed their doom, however. MHS was just 1-11 shooting in the third. From there, Huntingdon went from five up to 16 up in a span of just over five minutes.

That was pretty much that.

Huntingdon expanded its lead to 22 points twice in the final frame. Freshman Crystal Doub and sophomore Linley McClain each nailed triples in the final frame, but it was too little too late for the Lady Rebels. Brittany Bolen iced it for Huntingdon with :05 to play when she hit a three ball.

Limbaugh, the Lady Rebels' lone senior, draws the curtain on her career with eight points and one rebound. Bowden scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds. Amber Nunnery had three points and four rebounds. Doub and McClain had three points each. Gray had two points and six rebounds. Evan Hudgins scored two.

Wilkes led the Fillies with 15 points and eight rebounds. Milkelsey Jordan had 13 points and nine rebounds. Diedra Jordan had 12 points. Tashara Mabane had nine rebounds for Huntingdon.

The Lady Rebels end the season with a 7-15 mark.
