McKenzie's short-handed Lady Rebels did what they could to stay in the fight with Huntingdon's girls in District 13A basketball action Thursday night.
The Fillies took a big lead in the first half and held off two McKenzie runs to split the season series with the Lady Rebs, 40-30.
Huntingdon took a lead in the first frame and never turned loose despite McKenzie's best efforts. The Fillies jumped to a 9-3 lead in the first quarter and expanded it to 18-5 in the second frame when the Lady Rebels made a run. McKenzie went on a 9-2 run to cut the Fillies' lead to four at the half. Mignon Salameh, Morgan Limbaugh, Alex Gray and frosh Crystal Doub vaulted McKenzie back into contention.
The Lady Rebels tried to mount some defensive intensity in the third frame, but Mikelsey Jordan and Brittany Bolen started a 14-4 run that Samantha Wilkes ended. The second of Wilkes' buckets with 1:26 to play Huntingdon in front by 16, 34-18. Amber Nunnery rang the bell with :55 to play and the Lady Rebels trailed 34-20.
Huntingdon extended its advantage to 18 to start the fourth frame, 38-20, but McKenzie mounted another late run which cut the lead in half. Trevatia Bowden connected on a pair of free throws, Alex Gray added another, then Bowden scored two more times and Tenisha Carey made a nice drive to the tin for a score. McKenzie had sawed Huntingdon's lead and trailed 38-29. But it wasn't enough.
Mikelsey Jordan led Huntingdon with 14 points while Bolen added 11. Wilkes tossed in seven. Diedra Jordan and Tashara Mabane each had four.
Bowden led McKenzie with 14. Nunnery and Gray each had four, Carey scored three, Morgan Limbaugh and Salameh added two each and Evan Hudgins scored one.
McKenzie will play in the District 13A tournament Monday night at a time to be determined. The District 13A meeting will be held Friday morning at West Carroll High School.
