McKenzie finishes fourth in District 13A tournament

ATWOOD - In the District 13A tournament consolation round, had McKenzie fed the post, stopped West Carroll's penetration and been patient on offense, it might have picked up the third-place trophy Monday night at West Carroll. Who knows, had the Rebels done those things again Big Sandy, they might be hoisting the 13A championship hardware.

Instead, host West Carroll topped McKenzie 67-58, relegating McKenzie to the road against the No. 1-ranked Class A basketball team in the state for the first round of the Region 7A tournament: Union City.

McKenzie was 8-23 from the three-point line and when it fired up the triple and missed, often there was nothing but black West Carroll jerseys parked under the glass. Meanwhile, West Carroll was able race to the rack for bucket after bucket, building an 11-point lead at halftime and an eight-point lead in the third quarter.

The Rebels made runs at the War Eagles, including a 17-2 run to start the third for a 41-37 advantage. Derek Carr hit a pair of triple and Shabree Payne added another to help spark the run, then the Rebels went cold. West Carroll took a 46-45 lead after three. Carr hit a buzzer beater to cut it to one.

As the fourth started, McKenzie was 1-9 from the floor and the War Eagles streaked to a 59-51 lead with 3:17 to play. The Rebels were 2-9 from the three-point line in the the final frame. Payne and Hunter Herrin hit close-in shots, then Carr hit a triple to close the gap to two, 60-58. West Carroll ended the game with a 7-0 run.

"When we attacked the basket, we played pretty well," said McKenzie coach Lynn Yarbrough. "Then we'd start shooting those threes and shoot ourselves out of it."

Josh Brown had the hot hand early, nailing three triples, including two in the last 1:08. McKenzie led 18-15 after one. West Carroll outscored McKenzie 20-6 in the second quarter. The Rebs were a paltry 3-16 from the floor. Meanwhile, McKenzie had problems slowing down War Eagle guard Thomas Greer, who finished with 27 points, 14 of them coming in the second frame.

Payne led the Rebels with 22 points. Carr had 15 points. Josh Brown had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Tyler Holt and Hunter Herrin each had four. Brown, Carr and Payne each earned all-district honors.

Following Greer's 27 points, Clint Mcclain added 17.

The Rebels tentatively play at Union City 7 p.m. Friday. Check mckenzierebels.com for more Region 7A updates.

Clarksburg edged Big Sandy in the 13A boys' championship.
