ATWOOD - When the McKenzie Lady Rebels emerged from the locker room before their game at West Carroll, they took the floor with 11 players, eight of whom were freshman and sophomores.
McKenzie also was missing Zana Carter, who suffered a knee injury against Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central and is scheduled for surgery next week. That was 16 points the Lady Rebels would dearly miss.
The Lady Rebels, who haven't been known for their explosive offense this season, were really behind the eight ball when they faced a veteran, quality program in West Carroll. And the Lady War Eagles took a big lead early and went on to score a 70-29 victory.
The biggest difference in the game was the fact that West Carroll played on its end of the floor more than McKenzie did. It outshot the Lady Rebs 19-3 in the first quarter and took a 13-1 lead. The Lady Rebels helped that along as they turned the ball over 21 times in the first half. It wasn't that McKenzie was that bad. West Carroll is just that good this year.
McKenzie was a bit better in the second quarter. It attacked the basket and was able to establish more of an offense. But West Carroll still dominated. It was 8-22 shooting in the second frame and had 15 rebounds, including seven second-chance buckets. McKenzie, meanwhile, was 5-14 in the second quarter, which included a triple from freshman Crystal Doub. Tenish Carey, Evan Hudgins, Morgan Limbaugh and Linley McClain found the mark but West Carroll still led 34-13 at the half.
The Lady War Eagles outpaced McKenzie 20-3 to start the third for a 54-16 lead. Bowden tossed in a bucket early. Limbaugh hit a jumper, then a knocked out a pair of free throws to end the third.
Doub scored a deuce and a free throw in the final frame. Freshman Hannah Potts scored an old-fashioned three-point play in the fourth.
Limbaugh led the Lady Rebs with nine points. Bowden and Doub each scored six, Potts scored three, Carey and McClain two each and Kelsey Carr with one.
Brittany Luther scored 16 and Jessica Carter had 14 to lead the Lady War Eagles.
McKenzie will host the Fillies of Huntingdon 6:30 Thursday night in the regular-season finale.
