McKenzie senior cheerleaders Anna and Jenna Smith got to the Region 7A quarterfinal basketball game Saturday night just after halftime.
They had a good reason for being late. The pair was selected to be summer staff members for the Universal Cheerleaders Association.
The duo competed with over 100 different cheerleaders from across the state for limited spots on this presitgious staff and Saturday was the final cutdown day. When the tryout ended, the Smith twins were picked.
Both were pretty amped when they returned from Nashville.
"It was so fun," said Anna, beaming with a smile, with eyes as big as saucers.
UCA runs summer training camps for cheerleaders across the country and the Smiths will have an opportunity to travel for eight weeks this summer, teaching college, high school and middle school cheerleading squads techniques, chants, cheers and choreography.
"It was a four-day tryout that started at 10:30 this morning," Jenna said. "They had a cut at noon then another at 5 p.m. We had to do individual tumbling and jumps. It was just the best experience ever."
"We'll be teaching other squads for UCA all summer, hosting camps at different high schools and middle schools," Anna said. "We'll travel eight weeks this summer."
MHS cheerleading coach Audra Henderson said just being invited to try out is a big honor.
"The summer before their senior year, a staff member from UCA determines if cheerleaders have the qualities to be part of UCA," Henderson said. "It's a hard process and once you get recommended, you have to get a second invitation."
When the girls got the second summons, Henderson said she was a bundle of nerves.
"I was terrified one would make and one wouldn't," she said. "They only chose between 20 and 30 of 100 kids."
Fortunately, both made the cut and will be rather busy this summer.
"They will get the option to do large schools, small schools, colleges, high schools, middle schools, or whether they want to go off far away or stay nearby," Henderson said.
"It was the best experience ever," said Jenna of the process.
Sometime in April or May, the duo will join other staffers for training before they hit the road. They will join former McKenzie cheerleader Savanna Cooper as a UCA counselor.
Both Anna and Jenna will join the Bethel College Wildcat cheerleading squad next fall.
