When soon-to-be McKenzie junior Jake Johnson took part in the prestigious Schuman National Underclassman Football Combine at Battle Ground Academy last April, he just hoped to do well.
The number pinned on Johnson was 526 and you had to figure that there were at least that many linebackers there and they were attending from all over the country, not just Tennessee.
Imagine how Johnson felt when he learned he was named camp MVP.
"I was completely shocked," said Johnson. "There were so many good players there."
Johnson was named the top linebacker of the afternoon session and was invited to take part in the national combine next month in Carson, Calif., a Los Angeles suburb just north of Long Beach.
The prospects were evaluated through a number of criteria.
"We were had to do one-on-one, they timed us in the 40 and with the shuttle run and we had to do bench press," he said.
Johnson says he is pretty much unchanged by the success, which earned him a mention in a story on Rivals.com.
"I just want to try to help the team," he said. "I'm about the same as I was before, but now I feel like there will be more pressure on me."
Johnson tallied 52 total tackles, including 10 for loss, two fumnble recoveries, two pass break-ups, a blocked punt and an interception. He was part of a very potent linebacker corps which included all-state John Campbell, who was one of the state's leaders in tackles (116) and potential post-season honoree Jacob Fussell.
"I think Fussell would have done real well at this," said Johnson, though the camp was limited to freshmen and sophomores. Fussell was a junior last season. Johnson said local fitness guru Phil Campbell introduced Johnson to the combine and thought he had a chance to do real well.
"That's a good honor for him and hopefully he can turn that into some production," said McKenzie football coach Wade Comer. "Jake is a good player and we expect him to have a good year."
Johnson says he's ready to head to California to take part in the national combine.
"I'm very excited," he said. "There were some people at BGA who were from California and couldn't believe there was 1A football in Tennessee; they'd never heard of that before. I hope to show California what Tennessee football is all about."
