It may have been snowy, windy and cold when the McKenzie Rebels topped defending Region 7-3A champion Dyer County at Bethel back in early March 3-2, they had a bit of zip in their step.
That enthusiasm has maintained during summer workouts and Rebel football coach Wade Comer seems to be pleased.
"We ended spring on a strong note and it's carried over into the off-season," said Comer.
The Rebels lost 13 seniors from last year's 13-2 Class A state runner-up team, much of that coming up front. But the coach said this team has caught on pretty well.
"This is probably our most improved bunch we've had since we've been here," the coach said. "We have young people in some spots but they keep improving. They are still making some young mistakes, but they are finding out what they need to do."
Part of the reason why the Rebels are much improved is that the younger kids had to practice against one of the best teams in the state on a daily basis.
"We came out and got after Dyer County and played physical," said Comer. "We have a good foundation, but we just have to get better."
Rebels have been reporting for off-season conditioning 7 each morning at the Holland Sportsplex for weight lifting and conditioning. The players will continue their pre-season conditioning regimen until the end of June when the TSSAA dead period begins. The dead period ends after the July 4 holiday when the Rebels will return to the weightroom. Passing league action begins in July and then the Rebels will begin pre-season camp.
"We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go," Comer said.
