DRESDEN, Tenn. - A thing of beauty, it wasn't. But McKenzie secured the inside track to that coveted football playoff spot.
In a sloppy effort, pock marked by suspect officiating on both sides, McKenzie came away with a 43-26 victory, which wasn't as close as the score indicated. The Lions capped a 12-play, 55-yard drive with no time left to tack on a cosmetic TD.
The Rebels were pretty inconsistent on both sides of the ball, but the defense collect four turnovers (three interceptions, two by John Johnson, and a fumble recovery). Rebel junior Richie Clark picked off a pass and returned it 64 yards for a score. In addition, special teams made a difference, too. Evan Rogers had a blocked punt that he returned 45 yards for another touchdown.
"We were sloppy, but we won, that's the main thing," said McKenzie coach Wade Comer. "We played well for the most part, but we just didn't execute for the most part, obviously, but Dresden is a lot better."
Comer attributed the inconsistency to his walking wounded. Jake Johnson, who has been battling a hamstring issue since track season of his sophomore year, has been relegated to playing offense only. Senior running back Quinton Bowden suffers from a sore ankle. Andrew Doster has an arm injury while Jace Hargrove has been playing with a cast on his arm.
"We've been banged up so much and it's hard to get rhythm and cohesiveness," said Comer. "It's hard to get timing down, but hopefully we're getting healthier, but obviously we have a lot of work to do."
John Johnson, who earned all-state status last year thanks to his seven interceptions, seems to be on track again with two more picks Friday.
"John played well," said Comer. "But we're killing ourselves with a lot of busted plays and we can't keep doing that."
The Rebels scored in the first quarter after senior Evan Rogers recovered a fumble at the Dresden 44. Seven plays later, Jake Johnson scored from the 3. The PAT failed, but the Rebels led 6-0 with 5:22 to play.
John Johnson picked off a pass, which led to an unsuccessful 36-yard field goal attempt, but Johnson picked off another pass that led directly to another score. With 7:47 to play in the second frame, Bowden made the turnover count with a 19-yard scoring gallop. He also added the deuce for a 14-0 lead.
The Lions responded with a long drive, ending when Dale Hutcherson found receiver Tyler McPeak for a 15-yard TD pass with four tenths of a second left in the half. The conversion failed, but the Rebels led 14-6.
With 7:43 to play in the third, Clark picked off Hutcherson for a 64-yard interception return. On the two-pointer, Max Arnold hit Doster for the two-pointer and McKenzie led 22-6. With 1:07 to play in the third, Rogers blocked a punt and took it to the house. Alex Rider added the point-after for a commanding 29-6 lead.
Early in the fourth, Hutcherson hit Isaac Butler for a 22-yard scoring strike, then hit Daniel Harris for the two and the Lions cut the lead to 29-14. The Rebels responded with an eight-play, 57-yard drive. Jake Johnson scored from the 1 and Rider's kick boosted McKenzie to a 36-14 advantage.
The Lions answered with a 73-yard drive that ended withn Hutcherson found Butler open for a 28-yard TD pass. The conversion failed, but the Lions trailed 36-20.
With 1:40 to play, senior runner Keon Williams raced 29 yards for a touchdown. Rider booted McKenzie to a 43-20 lead. Dresden never quit, though, ending the game with a Hutcherson-to-Colin Kanehl TD pass as time expired.
The Rebels, 2-1, 1-0, host Trenton-Peabody Friday night. Dresden, which suffered its first defeat of the season, 2-1, 0-1, travels to Gibson County.
