McKENZIE, Tenn. - For a time, McKenzie's young Lady Rebel basketball team stood toe-to-toe with visiting Gleason Tuesday night.
But the very young Lady Rebels had no answers for Lady Bulldog post Emily Bell, who had 19 points, and sparked 17-2 run between the second and third quarters, a surge that basically put McKenzie away 42-21.
McKenzie took a brief 5-2 lead in the first quarter and soaked up a 9-0 Gleason run between the first and second frames to trail 12-10 with 4:14 to play in the second. Anna Comer, Infinity McClerkin and Emma McDaniel found the mark early and aided the Lady Rebels as they stayed right with Gleason.
But Bell waS too much under the glass. She had 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half. And because she drew so much defensive attention, the floor opened up for other Gleason players. Bell also finished with four rebounds.
Gleason led 25-14 at halftime, close enough to get back in the game, as was evident in the first half. But McKenzie wasn't afforded a single shot attempt in the third frame and managed one free throw, made by Carla Britt with 2:04 to play. From there, McKenzie and Gleason played swap out to the final buzzer.
McDaniel led the Lady Rebels with eight points and two boards. Comer had four points, Britt three, Emma Hawkins and Alicia Barrilleaux with two each and Maddie Barker with one.
McKenzie's next game is Saturday against Greenfield at Dresden. McKenzie is at Big Sandy Monday and returns home to face Huntingdon 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27.
DRESDEN GIRLS 43, McKENZIE 41 at Dresden: A 20-point third quarter basically doomed the visiting Lady Rebels Monday night. McKenzie led 6-2 after one and trailed 13-11 at the half. But the Lady Lions outscored McKenzie 30-16 in the second half.
McDaniel led the Lady Rebels with 13 points. Anna Comer scored six, Infinity McClerkin four, Jacey Davis and Carla Britt two each and Madison Allen 1.
