Gibson County escapes MHS with sweep

By: Jim Steele

McKenzie claimed a pair of District 13A basketball victories against visiting Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tuesday, Jan. 10.

In the girls' game, Anna Comer didn't have 60 points like she did in the overtime victory last season, and Lady Rebels head coach Lance McAllister said that was just fine with him. She scored 25 as McKenzie earned a 68-38 victory.

Central got off to a good start and led 17-13 in the opening frame and trailed the Lady Rebels at the half, 25-24. McKenzie sizzled the rest of the way. A 22-6 run to start the third quarter ended any upset aspirations by Central.

Haley Hughes led the Lady TIgers with 11 points, Shominique Pearson scored seven, Tiffany Hughey scored six, Olivia Lowry five, Rikki Grasser four and Brylee Williams for Central.

Shelby Butler scored 12, Jacey Davis, Bailey Nelson and Kaitlyn Morgan each scored five, Carissa Britt and Macey Ognibene each scored four, Isabella Colotta added three.

In the nightcap, McKenzie broke open a close game in the first to lead 14-9, then embarked on a 17-0 run in the second and effectively put the visiting TIgers away, 67-28. The Rebels outscored Central 14-2 in the first three minutes of the third to increase their margin. McKenzie led 59-24 by quater's end.
Grant Davis led the Tigers with nine points, Justin Hankins scored five, Brayden Frye and Mason Binkley each had three, Davion Harris and Gage Lowry each had two.

Brandon Baucum led the Rebels with 17, Dajour Edmonson scored 12, Lucas King and Paul Watkins each had seven, Preston Henderson scored six, Bryce Wiggins and Chase Colotta each had five, Mason King and Tyler King each had two and Tyler Spivey scored one.

Monday, McKenzie hosted Gibson County.
McKENZIE BOYS 55, GIBSON COUNTY 46 at McKenzie: The host Rebels avenged last year's Region 7A quarterfinal loss Monday night. Dajour Edmonson led the Rebels with 20 points while Tyler King scored 15. Brandon Baucum had nine, Preston Henderson scored seven and Lucas King scored four.

Jamarious Mayberry scored 12 and Mac Hicks added 10 for the Pioneers.

GIBSON COUNTY GIRLS 56, McKENZIE 37 at McKenzie: The host Lady Rebels started off pretty well against the perennial contender Lady Pioneers. MHS led 14-12 at the end of one and trailed 22-21 at the half, but things unraveled in the second half as the GC girls pulled away.

Justice Hill scored 20 to lead the Lady Pioneers. Anna Comer scored 18 for the Lady Rebels. Bailey Nelson had eight, Shelby Butler scored seven and Jacey Davis added two.
