Former McKenzie Hiigh School and Vanderbilt standout Drew Hayes, who also was with the Cincinnati Reds association until last season, has joined the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs with the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an independent minor league.
The former Rebel was signed as a starting pitcher. In two appearances, he is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in nine total innings of work. He has four strikeouts.
Hayes helped lead McKenzie to the 2006 Class A state baseball title before signing with Bethel University to play both football and baseball. After a year with the Wildcats, he inked with Vanderbilt University where he was used as a closer and weekend starter.
After his career with the Commodores, Hayes signed with the Reds in the 11th round of the 2010 draft and almost immediately joined the Billings Mustangs, the Reds' Advanced Rookie League franchise. He spent a year there before advancing to the Class A Dayton Dragons. In 2012, he played for the Class AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League. Last season, he was promoted briefly to Class AAA Louisville. On April 20, 2016, he was called up to Cincinnati where he made his debut against the Chicago Cubs the next day. Hayes spent, on and off, about a month with the parent club.
He is the son of Glenn and Joyce Hayes of McKenzie.
