McKenzie's Lady Rebel soccer team has earned one of the place settings at the 2A state tournament next week, and didn't have to lift a foot to do it.
McKenzie, who defeated, Martin-Westview 3-2 in the regional championship Thursday, was supposed to play Memphis-East in the sectional round 4 p.m. Saturday. According to multiple sources, the Lady Mustangs didn't have enough players who wanted to make the trip to MHS.
As a result, the Lady Rebels will earn their first state-tournament bid in program history. McKenzie will play 1:30 Wednesday at Siegel High School in Murfreesboro against an opponent to be determined.
The Lady Rebels defeated Gibson County 4-1 in the opening round of the District 13A tournament. Westview defeated McKenzie 7-3 in a game where the entire Martin fan base was ejected late in the game.
Power Center Academy of Memphis forfeited its Region 7A semifinal game and the Lady Rebels found themselves playing for the regional title in addition to a substate round.
The Lady Rebels will know who they play Sunday.
