HUNTINGDON - Big Sandy managed to threaten with runners on second and third to start the first inning of its District 13A game against McKenzie Monday.
Within an hour, those two baserunners were a distant memory as McKenzie piecemealed a three-inning, 17-0 victory over the Lady Red Devils in opening-round play of the District 13A softball tournament. The Lady Rebels kept chipping away at Big Sandy pitching. MHS hitters never got a crisp piece of the ball until the second and third innings and those came late.
McKenzie crossed six runs in the first, eight in the second and three more in the third, thanks to freshman Hannah Potts' base-clearing triple to center that eventually ended the game early in the third.
Sarah Owen was the winning pitcher, working two innings while Crystal Doub came in to work the third and shut it down. It was not a save situation, obviously, but she did pitch well, too.
In the firs,t Evan Hudgins walked, Kate Barcroft dropped down a bunt hit then Tenisha Carey reached on an error that scored Hudgins. Trevatia Bowden popped up a seeing0-eyed infield blooper to score Barcroft and MHS led 2-0. Mignon Salameh walked then Colby Prosser reached on an error after driving in a pair of runs. Courtney Smith, running for Prosser, came in when Lesley Robertson reached on an error and McKenzie had posted a 6-0 lead.
In the second inning, with one out, Bowden ripped a triple and scored on a passed ball. Salameh walked, Prosser singled but was thrown out at second, but Salameh scored. Kelsie Poore walked, Sarah Owen singled. Poore came home on a passed ball, Robertson walked, then Hudgins craced a two-run single. Carey crushed a two-run double and scored on a wild pitch. Bowden singled.
In the third, with one out, Poore, Doub and Kimberlee Sloan each walked, setting the table for Potts' three-run triple that ended the game early.
The Lady Rebels face Bruceton 5:30 Tuesday night in winners' bracket play.
