McKenzie's Lady Rebels accomplished several goals during Monday's game at Clarksburg.
First of all, the Lady Rebs belted six hits and jumped on the Lady Rockets early. Second, they put the ball in play and made Clarksburg defenders make decisions. Third, they built some depth and saw some results.
As a result, the Lady Rebels avenged last year's 6-0 District 13A semifinal season-ending loss with an 10-4 victory at Parkers Crossroads.
Three hits and two walks resulted in three first-inning runs for the Lady Rebels. They pushed two more across in the third and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
"We hit the ball today," said McKenzie coach Jessica Hardy. "We were awfully young today, but we got some big hits today.'
Kate Barcroft singled, doubled and drove in a run. Trevatia Bowden had two hits and an RBI. Hannah Potts tripled and scored in the sixth. Kelsey Carr singled, doubled and drove in three runs. Doub added an RBI. Barcroft is a sophomore, Bowden, Potts, Doub and Carr are freshman.
The youth came through.
McKenzie senior Sarah Owen pitched three innings effectively, fanning four. Crystal Doub entered in the fourth, retiring the first three batters she faced in the fourth, all ground outs back to the pitcher. She struggled a bit in the fifth, but wriggled out of trouble to finish up.
Defensively, the Lady Rebels were solid, turning two double plays. In the sixth, Kimberly Sloan tracked down a fly ball then fired to Mignon Salameh at second to double off the runner. In the Lady Rocket seventh, Salameh snared a pop-up and fired to shortstop Bowden at second for the second twin-killing of the game, which ended the affair. The Lady Rebs almost had another double play in the third, but just missed the chance.
McKenzie started strong. In the first, Barcroft singled, Evan Hudgins walked, then Bowden singled in Barcroft. Tenisha Carey grounded out to drive in a run and Salameh singled in a run.
In the third, with two out, Salameh walkled, Colby Prosser reached on an error and was swapped for courtesy runner Courtney Smith. Carr singled them both home for a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Rebels added two in the fourth. Hudgins walked and took second on a passed ball. Barcroft doubled her home and scored on Carey's fielder's choice. MHS led 7-0.
Clarksburg posted four in the fifth. Amanda Renfroe cranked a two-run double with two out.
In the sixth, Potts laced an opposite-field triple and scored on Hudgins' grounder. MHS led 8-4 at that point.
In the seventh, Salameh walked, Carr doubled, Doub drove in Salameh and Carr scored on a passed ball.
The Lady Rebels are 5-5 overall, improve to 4-1 in District 13A and step outside of league play for a twinbill with visiting Gleason 5 p.m. Tuesday.
