Lady Rebels rally to beat 3A Henry County

Carey's crank scores 2 in seventh for 5-4 win

By JIM STEELE

McKenzie softball coach Jessica Hardy said it was important for her girls to handle adversity well. At times this year, when the Lady Rebs have fallen behind, they have, perhaps sulked.

Friday, against Triple-A Henry County, McKenzie took an early 2-0 lead, but watched the Lady Patriots score four in the fifth for a 4-2 lead.

Hardy sensed a lull in the Lady Rebels' demeanor and urged them not to let down. They didn't.

In the sixth, the Rebels got a run back to trail 4-3 and in the seventh scored twice more to win the game. Tenisha Carey's two-run single lifted McKenzie to its fourth win of the season.

"The bats started working today and we had people on the bases with heads-up running position," said Hardy. "We'd been up the whole game and I didn't want us to let up. When we got down, I told the kids they can't deflate."

McKenzie scored a run in the second when Trevatia Bowden doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on Mignon Salameh's RBI single. Colby Prosser singled in the inning, but didn't score. In the fourth, Bowden reached on an error and came home on a wild pitch.

Henry County found its timing and scored four runs on three hits a walk and two errors. The Lady Pats led 4-2. McKenzie tacked on another run in the sixth after forcing HC to leave two runners stranded in the top half. Bowden singled in the sixth, took second on a fielder's choice and scored on Prosser's hit.

In the seventh, freshman hurler Crystal Doubs set down Henry County in order and the Lady Rebs came to bat in their half.

Evan Hudgins led off with a walk and took second on freshman Hannah Potts' base hit. Hudgins took third on a passed ball. With no one out in, Carey rocketed a worm-burner down the third-base line, plating Hudgins and Potts for the game.

Sarah Owen was the starting pitcher, fanning three. Doub, who collected the victory, also struck out three.

Many Lady Rebels were out of the lineup today for extra-curricular commitments, so many Lady Rebels were out of position.

"We were missing a lot of people today," said Hardy. "And we had a lot of people step up today."

McKenzie improves to 4-5 on the season. This victory could catapult the Lady Rebels to winning spree.

"This was a big win for us today," she said. "We could start clicking and could get it going."
