HUNTINGDON - Huntingdon all-state hurler Brooke Thomas was on her game. She struck out 19 Lady Rebel hitters, nine looking, and had a spree of 15 straight Ks before Tenisha Carey interrupted the string with a ground out.
In reality, though, Thomas was lucky to escape with a 2-1 victory.
McKenzie played pretty well against their ancient nemesis, especially defensively, but couldn't solve the problem of Thomas, who gave up two hits in the second inning and that was that.
"You can see we have a lot of youth in our lineup," said MHS coach Jessica Hardy. "We have three seniors and two juniors. But even with the youth, I thought everybody played their position very well and communicated well."
Huntingdon only had three hits itself, but crafted a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Hardy said she was concerned that her team might fall apart after falling behind so early. The Lady Rebels didn't. In fact, they got stronger, defensively. And senior pitcher Sarah Owen struck out four and scattered just three hits. She found her spots and had excellent control. In the fourth, freshman Crystal Doub came in and worked three perfect innings, fanning one.
After falling behind, the Lady Rebels bounced right back. Freshman Trevatia Bowden reached on a single then freshman Kelsie Poore lifted a shot over the right fielder's head for a run-scoring triple. Then McKenzie's bats went silent.
"We looked at too many third strikes tonight. If we could have had situations where we could have bunted people around, maybe we could have rattled them a little bit," said Hardy. "Huntingdon has a solid team and you can't win if you don't score."
The Lady Rebels, 2-1 in District 13A, 2-4 overall, hit the practice field Thursday afternoon, then host District 13A foe Clarksburg 5 p.m. Friday at Mulberry Park. Clarksburg ended the Lady Rebels season last year in the District 13A semifinals and knocked them out of regional play.
