McKenzie's softball team may just now be getting its offensive groove back. The Lady Rebels, who normally have played 15 games by now and ordinarily would have faced dozens of pitchers, hasn't had that luxury, thanks to the weather this year.
So, it's taken some time, but if Monday's game is any indication, MHS just might be heating up offensively. The Lady Rebels cranked nine hits in a 13-3 victory over visiting West Carroll Monday afternoon at Mulberry Park.
The victory moves the Lady Rebs to 3-4 overall, but more importantly, 3-1 in District 13A.
The Lady Rebels enjoyed production for areas where they are going to needed it. And after a sluggish start, they erupted for four runs in the second, four in the fourth and five in the fifth to end things early.
"We had those two early tournaments rained out and that's why our bats haven't come around until just now," said MHS coach Jessica Hardy. "Normally, we would have seen 20 or 30 different pitchers by now, but we've maybe seen 10. But our bats started to come around today."
Mignon Salameh singled and tripled. So did Crystal Doub. Trevatia Bowden was 2-2 with a pair of walks, Kate Barcroft and Tenisha Carey each singled while Lesley Robertson cranked a double.
Sarah Owen was the starting pitcher and scattered four hits and struck out one. Freshman Crystal Doub entered in the fourth, allowed seven hits.
Misty Garmany hit a three-run homer off the top of the scoreboard in left-center. McKenzie was up 8-0 before the blast.
McKenzie visits former 2A rival Camden 6 p.m. Tuesday then hosts Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central 5 p.m. Thursday. The Central game was originally set as a road game for MHS, but because of an academic banquet on April 28, the Lady Rebels will visit Central on that date instead of Thursday. Friday, the Lady Patriots of Henry County come to McKenzie for a 5 p.m. start.
The rained out game with Clarksburg has been reset for 4:30 Wednesday, April 16. The rained out home game with Camden has been set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 30. Senior Night will be Monday, April 21 when McKenzie hosts Stewart County.
