The McKenzie High School boys' track team continues to thunder through the field of competitors. Last week at the Best of the West meet in Jackson, McKenzie was the first place boys' team in the event. The girls finished fourth.
Rebel junior Mark Cole, capitalizing on last year's track success and this year's runner-up finish in the state cross country meet, collected three first-place medals and was the high point male runner of the meet. He was first in the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs. Cole, many may remember had a personal-best 10:09 for fifth place in the state track meet last year in Murfreesboro.
Adding fuel to McKenzie's fire is newcomer senior John Campbell, who captured first in the discus, as he often did last year representing Jackson-North Side.
Harris laughrey was second in the 400. John Johnson, Jake Johnson, John Campbell and Austin McKinney teamed for second in the 800 relay. Hunter Herrin was second in the high jump. Austin McKinney was second in the long jump. Holden Stettlemire was third in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. Laughrey, John Johnson, Herrin and Chris Johnson were third in the 1600 relay. John Johnson, Andrew Semirosum, Laughrey and Conor Scruton were third in the 3200 relay. Evan Rogers placed third in the triple jump. Alex Pierce, Elijah Harris, Tyler Moore and Zach McEwen scored points for the MHS boys.
Meanwhile, Hannah Scruton showed why she was a state medalist a year ago. She was second in the 800 and third in the 1600, then teamed with Abby Carlton, Christine Mason and Becky Jones for third in the 1600 relay.
Kenisha Williams changed from softball to track uniforms on Thursday to take second in the discus and shot put. Mason was second in the long jump. Wynter Strayhorn was third in the 300 hurdles. Other scorers for the Lady Rebels were Trevatia Bowden, Kelsey Cooper, Mallory Dunavan, Brittany Hinton and Angelique Teague.
