McKenzie senior John Campbell and junior Mark Cole will represent McKenzie with a good chance at a gold medal when they head to Murfreesboro for the Class A-AA state track meet.
Cole blistered the pace in the 3200 to win the sectional title with at 10:13.91, almost two seconds ahead of the second-pace finisher, Konner Kessler of Bolivar. In the 1600, Cole streaked to a 4:45:82, almost eight seconds ahead of Memphis-Hillcrest's Kentrell Wilson. Cole was a medalist last year in the 3200, finishing fifth with a 10:09.
McKenzie will have a long day at the Class A-AA state track and field meet Friday. Cole will take part in the 3200 run 9 a.m. Friday. Campbell is set to throw 12:15 Friday in the discus. Cole and the rest of the 1600 field will run after 5 p.m. Friday.
Meanwhile, in the discus, Campbell, who hurled it 140 feet in regionals, claimed the A-AA sectional crown with a toss of 130-08.25. His toss was two feet better than Lexington's Quincy Buckley. Campbell was sixth last year in the discus with a hurl of 133 feet, representing Jackson-North Side.
Senior Hannah Scruton, who was eighth last year in the state 800, missed qualifying in the 800 by finishing sixth with a 2:45.20. In the girls' 1600, Scruton finished her fine track career with a 5:47.23. In the 800, she was sixth with a 2:45.
Senior Tyler Moore finished his high school career with a toss of 109-05 in the discus for seventh place. Connor Scruton finished sixth in the 3200 with an 11:22.86. Sophomore Wynter Strayhorn was fifth in the 300 hurdles at 53.30. In the 4X400 boys' relay, McKenzie was sixth with a 3:44.40. Rebels eligible to run the 4X400 are Harris Laughrey, Mark Cole, Austin McKinney, Derek Carr, Hunter Herrin, John Johnson, Jake Johnson and John Campbell.
The McKenzie boys' team finished seventh overall in 19 scored events with 38 points while the Lady Rebels were 14th with 11. Teams in the sectional meet included Memphis-Mitchell, University School of Jackson, Booker T. Washington, Dyersburg, Memphis-Trezevant, Fayette-Ware, Memphis-Sheffield, Memphis-Treadwell, Frayser, Jackson-North Side, Jackson Christian school, Oakhaven, Humboldt, Trinity, Dyer County, Ripley, Covington, Haywood, Jackson-South Side, Lexington, City University of Memphis, Big Sandy, Ripley, Memphis-Carver, Memphis-Westwood, Union City, Bolivar and Manassas.
