It has been said that the only way to get better is to take on better competition. The Union City Rotary Relays certainly provide that and more.
McKenzie was one of three public Class A schools in the event, facing the likes of track contenders Dyersburg, Dyer County, 3A Munford, Bolivar and Jackson Christian School. The cotton was pretty tall, but Rebel runners managed fairly well.
Was it the best outing for McKenzie? Probably not. But thhe Union City meet served as a good springboard for the remainder of the season.
In the girls' meet, McKenzie was seventh out of nine teams, scoring 30 points. Dyersburg won the team event with 144 points. Munford was a distant second at 91. On the boys' side, McKenzie was sixth of eight, but was right in the thick of things. Munford raced to 141 points to win the team crown, Dyersburg was second at 128 points and host Union City scored 79. Fulton Co., Ky. had 66, JCS 39 and McKenzie 36, easing past Bolivar by a single point.
In the girls' meet, McKenzie senior Hannah Scruton won the mile at 5:52. McKenzie sophomore Alex Gray was fifth in the discus at 70-4. Christine Mason was 11-9 in the long jump for fifth. Wynter Strayhorn was fourth in the 110 hurdles at 18.78. The 440 relay team finished fifth at 58.33. In the 880 relay, McKenzie's girls were fifth at 2:02. In the mile relay, McKenzie was fourth at 4:57.
In the boys' meet,
Tyler Moore was third at 117-6 and John Campbell was fourth at 114-6 in the discus. Evan Rogers had a high jump of 5-4 for fifth. Rogers also had a triple jump of 32-10 for sixth. Mark Cole was second in the two-mile run at 10:41. McKenzie's 440 relay team was fifth at 46.91. Connor Scruton was fifth in the mile at 5:19. In the 880 relay, McKenzie was third at 1:38. In the 220, Harris Laughrey was fifth at 24.25. McKenzie was fifth in the mile relay at 4:01.
